Our web design process

Content

We begin by helping you to articulate the message and offer you want to broadcast to the the world. The creation of conversion-focused marketing copy is a science, and we can show you the way. We will work with you collaboratively to create and refine the website copy using Google Docs. We also use a simple and intuitive tool called Basecamp as the central hub for your project, which makes the process of collecting and sharing project assets very easy, with everything organised in one place.

Moodboard

This is the fun part! You can tell us about any inspirational designs or ideas you admire - perhaps some top competitors you're striving to challenge, or just an awesome website in a totally different industry that you happen to love. We'll also do our own research and put together some further ideas and references of our own. Then we'll bring everything together in a moodboard using Miro - another very simple tool which allows you to view ideas and leave comments on everything in one place, without needing to register or sign in to anything. You can cherry pick all your favourite bits, then we'll combine them into a best-of-breed concept which will form the basis of our initial design drafts.

Web Design

We put on our thinking caps and develop the ideas into a homepage mockup, then share the draft with you to collect your feedback and discuss whether you feel we're on the right track. If applicable and helpful for the project, we will create user journey flows / wireframes too. Once the homepage concept feels solid, we produce mockups for the rest of the site's pages, including desktop and mobile device layouts, and share with you for feedback in the same way. We iterate on an unlimited basis until you're completely happy.

Web Development

Once you're happy with the design mockups, we move on to the build stage where we bring the designs to life. We’re WordPress specialists and our main areas of technical expertise are HTML5, CSS, PHP, JavaScript and SVG. We incorporate industry-leading tools which allow you to update the content for your website in-house with user-friendly editors, without having to rely on our development team. You will be able to preview everything on our development server URL before the launch, without affecting your existing website (if you have one), before it goes live on your own domain name.

QA & Launch

Once the new website has been built according to the mockups, we carry out extensive fine-tuning, checking, testing and quality assurance to ensure that everything is carefully polished and completed. We will happily continue to make any further small tweaks and revisions that may catch your eye too. When it's ready to go live, we recommend hosting it on our fast, scalable, 100% renewable energy Green Hosting plan - although this is optional, not an obligation. We will launch the website outside UK business hours, to help minimise any risk of disruption during the process.

Maintenance

Going forward, it's vital that your website's software gets updated regularly as it helps ensure that patches for any security vulnerabilities are installed promptly. This helps to protect you from malicious hacking attacks, which are unfortunately widespread and continuous for the vast majority of websites these days. In addition, we can continuously monitor your website for you - so we quickly discover any unexpected problems and proactively resolve them.

How much do you charge for a typical web design project?

Our pricing is generally in the mid-range of the market. We're a full-time team of specialists, so we're more expensive than hiring an individual freelancer. However, our fees are significantly lower and more affordable than big agencies. We focus on helping relatively small businesses who are trying to do good for the world, rather than pitching for huge contracts with famous brands.

What are the payment terms? Do you offer payment plans?

If the project is expected to run for longer than 1 month, we will split the total project fee into 3 monthly instalments. If the project is expected to be completed in less than 1 month, we will instead issue a 50% deposit invoice to be paid up-front when we begin work, with the remaining 50% balance to be paid when the website launches. For our monthly recurring hosting and maintenance options, billing begins at the time the website launches. We accept all major debit and credit cards including MasterCard, Visa and American Express, or direct bank transfers. We provide full invoices and VAT receipts.
